Another club is paying most of the starting quarterback's salary, which is the oddest fact behind Minnesota Vikings betting odds this season.

Kyler Murray was named the Week 1 starter on 12 August, before a preseason snap was played, and the decision survived the cutdown.

He signed on 12 March for one year at the league minimum, roughly 1.3 million dollars, after Arizona released him.

Arizona remain liable for the $36.8 million dollars he is guaranteed this season.

The man he beat is J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback Minnesota took in the first round two years ago.

Kevin O'Connell was careful about it.

"Nothing changes as far as J.J. being an incredibly important member of our quarterback room," he said, adding that McCarthy "is holding the pen on his story."

At the cutdown Minnesota carried four quarterbacks on the initial 53: Murray, McCarthy, Carson Wentz and the undrafted Max Brosmer.

No Vikings roster had done that in at least a decade.

The rest of the cutdown was ordinary by comparison. They waived 24, waived six more with injury designations and terminated four veteran contracts, including the punter Johnny Hekker.

They claimed the guard Trevor Keegan and the centre Nick Samac, and traded the lineman Walter Rouse to New England.

The general manager changed too. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was sacked on 30 January after four seasons, and Nolan Teasley was hired from Seattle on 1 June.

So a club with a new general manager has handed its season to a quarterback on a minimum deal ahead of its own first round pick.

Third in Total Defence and Last in the League in Turnovers

Minnesota finished 9-8, scoring 344 points, 26th in the league, and conceding 333, 7th.

The defence ranked 3rd in total yards and 2nd against the pass. The offence ranked 28th.

And they gave the ball away 30 times, more than any team in the NFL.

That combination explains a 4-8 start, their worst since 2013, followed by 5 straight wins to finish.

They also became the first club since the 1992 Broncos to be shut out and then shut out an opponent in consecutive weeks, beating Washington 31-0 for a first shutout win since 2023.

No Minnesota player made the Pro Bowl, the first time that had happened since 2014.

The edge rusher Jonathan Greenard was traded to Philadelphia during the April draft, two years into a four year deal, after twelve sacks in 2024 fell to three in twelve games last season.

Murray's career interception numbers are not the reason he is here, and the offence he inherits ranked 28th.

Fix the giveaways and a top three defence is enough in most divisions. If they don't then the quarterback question becomes academic by November.
