A Head Coach Sacked in October and Two Replacements From the Same Cycle
Brian Callahan was sacked on 13 October last season with the club 1-5, leaving on a 4-19 record. Mike McCoy went 2-9 as interim.
Robert Saleh was hired as head coach on 22 January from the San Francisco defensive coordinator job. He went 20-36 as head coach of the Jets between 2021 and 2024.
Brian Daboll, sacked as head coach of the Giants in November, arrived as offensive coordinator on 27 January. Gus Bradley runs the defence.
So the two men shaping this season were both let go from head coaching jobs inside the last eighteen months, and both landed here.
The 1-11 start last season was the worst by the franchise since 1994, when it was still the Houston Oilers.
They Released Both Backup Quarterbacks and Kept Two
Cam Ward, the first overall pick of the 2025 draft, started all seventeen games as a rookie. He completed 323 of 540 for 3,169 yards with fifteen touchdowns and seven interceptions.
He was sacked 55 times, which is the number that says most about the roster around him.
At the cutdown Tennessee released both Will Levis and Hendon Hooker, leaving Ward and Mitchell Trubisky as the only quarterbacks on the roster.
Levis, a second round pick in 2023 who missed all of last season after shoulder surgery, cleared waivers unclaimed and became a free agent. Hooker resigned to the practice squad.
Tennessee also claimed three players off waivers and released five who had made the initial 53 to fit them in.
The defensive back Nazeeh Johnson is suspended for six games under the performance enhancing substances policy and is eligible to return on 19 October.
Elic Ayomanor and a CFL Draft That Never Happened
Elic Ayomanor, born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, is on the active roster in his second season.
Tennessee took him in the fourth round in 2025 and he caught 41 passes for 515 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie.
There is a detail worth knowing.
He was ranked the number one prospect for the 2025 CFL draft and went undrafted there, because every CFL club knew he was going to the NFL.
The receiver Wan'Dale Robinson arrived this offseason carrying an 11.27 million dollar cap hit.
Last season with the Giants he caught 92 passes for 1,014 yards and became the shortest player, at five foot eight, to record a 1,000 yard receiving season.
The club also took the Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate fourth overall, on a four year deal worth 53.1 million dollars with a 33.6 million signing bonus.
Tate is 7.00 for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

What September Tells You
Tennessee open at home against the Jets, which is Saleh's first game in charge against the club that sacked him.
It is also a meeting of the two longest prices in the AFC outside Cleveland and Miami.
The win line is 6.5 and the market leans under it at 1.70. Tennessee have won three games in each of the last two seasons.
This is a rebuild in its opening month, with a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator and a receiver taken fourth overall.
It also has a quarterback who was sacked 55 times behind a line that has since been rebuilt around him.
What September will show is whether the sack number was the line or the quarterback. Everything else on this page depends on that answer.
This is also the final season at the current Nissan Stadium. The replacement, a domed 2.1 billion dollar building, opens in 2027.
