Japan World Cup 2026 Squad & Betting Guide
Updated June 17, 2026 for latest soccer odds and parlay options: Japan were the first non-host nation to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Beat Germany and Spain in the 2022 group stage. Beat Scotland and England in March 2026 friendlies.
Game Prediction: Tunisia vs Japan
The Samurai Blue arrive with genuine quarterfinal ambitions and the record against European opposition justifies it. The question is whether Moriyasu's system can break through the round of 16 barrier that has followed Japan for seven consecutive tournaments.

The Moriyasu System
First coach to lead Japan through back to back World Cup cycles. His 3-4-2-1 provides defensive security while unleashing two of the most exciting wingers in European club football.
The signature: a super sub strategy that absorbs first half pressure and releases fresh attacking weapons after the 60th minute into tired defensive lines.
That approach is specifically designed to beat teams who dominate possession without finishing clinically. The Netherlands fit that description (lacking elite strikers). So do Sweden.
Japan's second half record across the last two years is significantly better than their first half record, and that split is the key to pricing their group matches. First half draw, second half Japan is a pattern worth building an SGP around.
The penalty shootout loss to Croatia in 2022 remains the reference point. Japan controlled that match for long stretches but could not find the decisive goal. If the expanded format gives them a round of 32 match before the quarterfinal stage, the path to breaking through has never been wider.
The Attacking Duo
Takefusa Kubo of Real Sociedad is the creative engine. Dribbling. Vision. Left foot. One of the most watchable players at the tournament.
Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton brings explosive pace from the opposite flank. Together they give Japan an attacking threat that genuine title contenders have struggled to contain.
The combination is difficult to prepare for between group matches. Kubo drifts inside. Mitoma stays wide and isolates full backs. The dual threat forces teams to choose which side to protect, and that choice creates space for the other.
Captain Wataru Endo of Liverpool provides the midfield shield (but has been out for months with ankle ligament injury). Endo might not make it back to fitness in time which would be a loss.
Daichi Kamada of Crystal Palace adds Premier League quality. Ao Tanaka of Leeds offers composure centrally. Ritsu Doan scored crucial equalisers against both Germany and Spain in 2022. Zion Suzuki of Parma has the gloves.
The Quarterfinal Barrier
Seven consecutive World Cups since 2002. Round of 16 in four of them. Never a quarterfinal. The 2022 group stage performance against Germany and Spain raised global expectations permanently.
The expanded format provides the widest path to the quarters Japan have ever had. Best third placed teams qualify. The maths favours a team built to grind tight results.
Fixtures and What Each One Means
June 14: Netherlands vs Japan, AT&T Stadium, Arlington. The defining opener. Japan's record against higher ranked European sides is the best in Asian history. If the Netherlands lead at half time, the match enters the phase where Moriyasu's super sub approach is strongest. The draw line carries value. Second half Japan goals are the SGP angle.
June 20: Tunisia vs Japan. Tunisia qualified without conceding. Two low block defensive systems in the same match. This will be tight and decided by a single moment. Set piece or transition. The under is the default.
June 24: Japan vs Sweden, AT&T Stadium, Arlington. Back in Arlington. Potter's direct approach with Gyokeres bypasses the midfield entirely. A different test from the first two fixtures. Japan's back three will be tested physically in a way the Netherlands and Tunisia do not replicate.
Japan's second half profile is the anchor. Like we said, Moriyasu's super sub strategy creates a measurable performance split. Build around late goals, second half overs, and the Kubo-Mitoma combination in chance creation markets. Don't underestimate Japan.
